February 2012 Gig

WebSockets & WebWorkers - Getting plugged in, powered up and getting things done

BAND member Corey Gray will present on two current Javascript technologies:  WebSockets and WebWorkers. He'll discuss the JWebSocket and XSockets APIs as well as the browser support for these features. Come and see how these technologies work and learn how you might use them in your web apps!

Cory's Notes

jWebsocket can be found at jWebsocket.org and has tons of obviously jWebsocket specific examples, websocket.org is a good place for info about websockets and has simple example code as well as hosting an echo socket server.  CanIUse.com has charts for browser compatibility on everything HTML5 and related APIs.  http://www.whatwg.org/specs/web-apps/current-work/multipage/workers.html is a link I just found to info about webworkers.  It has some examples and covers shared workers also.  The presentation was done in Libre office which is branched from open office.  I think everyone at the gig knows I don't have a paid version of Microsoft Office! :)  I'm pretty sure Libre can save in Office format if you think that format would be better.
